A review report submitted to the Economic Planning Unit of the Prime Minister’s Department, in conjunction with the 2019 SDG Summit Malaysia held on 7 November 2019. This was prepared by the Malaysian CSO-SDG Alliance on Malaysia’s progress in the implementation of the UN Sustainable Development Goals, for the period between 2016 and 2019.
In this document, sixteen people representing various organisations made contributions based on their areas of expertise. These are essentially advocacy aspects calling on the Government to take a stronger position in SDGs. These CSOs have in this document attempted to write down their concerns and hope policy makers will be able to appreciate these findings as input and review of some of the most pressing issues and concerns in the localisation of SDGs especially in ensuring an impact on the ground.
Jia Yaw contributed on the theme of human rights and environmental justice on behalf of the Bar Council Environment & Climate Change Committee. His report included a brief review of the legal and institutional landscape between 2016 and 2019. This touched on the proposed civil procedure rules for facilitating environmental proceedings, environmental courts, proposed Environmental Protection Act, Sungai Kim Kim river pollution and the transboundary haze problem.
Jia Yaw's paper was one out of the eleven papers on key concerns and recommendations to the Government.
