Jia Yaw was nominated and elected as a Fellow of the Academy of Sciences Malaysia in its 2023 Annual General Meeting

Monday, 8 May 2023

35 new Fellows were elected this year, with 9 new Fellows coming from the social sciences and humanities discipline. Jia Yaw is the only legal practitioner among the present 484 Fellows.

We are delighted to share that Jia Yaw's nomination as a Fellow of the Academy of Sciences Malaysia (ASM) was successful at the ASM's 28th Annual General Meeting held on 29th April 2023.

This year, the social sciences and humanities discipline saw a strong emphasis, with 9 Fellows elected from this category. Jia Yaw was one of them. A total of 35 Fellows were elected this year. Another newly nominated Fellow from the legal field is is Prof. Dr. Choong Yeow Choy, a Judicial Commissioner of the High Court of Malaya and former dean from Universiti Malaya.

Among the present 484 ASM Fellows, there are two other Fellows specialising in law, namely Prof. Dato' Aishah Bidin and Emeritus Prof. Datuk Shad Faruqi.

It appears that Jia Yaw is the only practising lawyer among the present Fellows.

Jia Yaw is extremely humbled and honoured to be nominated (nomination was made by Prof. Dato' Aishah Bidin and seconded by Ir. Ts. Mohamed Haniffa Abdul Hamid) and elected.

He views the fellowship as a call to action, not a pat on the back.

The Academy of Sciences Malaysia is established under the Academy of Sciences Malaysia Act 1994. It plays the role of a think tank to the Malaysian government on all things science, technology and innovation (STI). One of its mission is to make STI a basis for economic development and societal well-being. Jia Yaw believes that his election is based on the role he can play towards that end. He will do his best!

Our heartiest congratulations to the other Fellows elected in 2023:
