In the wake of the Selangor government's U-turn on the degazettement of the KLNFR, Jia Yaw talks about some legal measures needed to protect forest reserves.
The Selangor state government has announced the regazettement of the Kuala Langat North Forest Reserve, after massive pushback from the public.
BFM's Sharmilla Ganesan and Lee Chwi Lynn first spoke with Faizal Parish, Director, Global Environment Centre and Representative of the Pertahankan Hutan Simpan Kuala Langat Utara Coalition to learn of its significance. Then, they looked at the long journey it took to get to this point. And finally, they spoke with Jia Yaw on the legal measures needed to ensure that this does not happen again.
Jia Yaw hopes that all the states in Malaysia will amend their respective forestry laws to require the state government to conduct a public consultation before any forest reserve can be excised. To him, the end-game form of our rules of governance must be an "invitation to struggle", in form and in substance.
