Jia Yaw and Mellaney were case scenario writers for WWF Malaysia’s Inter-Varsity Mock Trial Competition which concluded after 5 rounds in 8 months.
Our friends at WWF Malaysia organised the Second National Inter-Varsity Mock Trial Competition (NMTC 2.0) again this year (the first one was held in 2021), which begun in January and concluded in August. The competition aimed to raise awareness on the importance of the judiciary and the court systems to safeguard conservation of the natural environment and uphold environmental justice.
Joining a few lawyers from the Bar Council Environment and Climate Change Committee, Jia Yaw and Mellaney were part of the team who crafted the 5 unique case scenarios for the competition. With cases ranging from damage caused by “sustainable” infrastructure to seeking a declaration of environmental rights, the writers allowed the students to explore the different facets of environmental law.
While the process of crafting the cases was not easy (neither was it smooth sailing!), it was rewarding to see it come to live with the interactions of the judges and the students. We attended the final round which saw a distinguished panel of The Honourable Justice Dato' Mary Lim Thiam Suan (Retired Federal Court Judge), Dato' Dhanaraj Vasudevan (Kamil Hashim Raj and Lim Advocates and Solicitors), and Puan Rafiqha Hanim Mohd Rosli (Sessions Court Judge).
A hearty congratulations to all the participants for taking the time and effort to prepare for the competition, which is considerably more challenging than mooting since it encompasses the entire trial process, including drafting statements and submission of documents. We hope that the competition inspires more environmental justice advocates stemming from the growing legal fraternity.
